Laurel, Maryland was formed from land on the fall line of the Patuxent River owned by the Snowden family, which also owned Montpelier. A grist mill on the site circa 1811 grew to a small cotton mill by the 1820s. In 1835, coinciding with the opening of the rail line from Baltimore to Washington, the Patuxent Manufacturing Company was chartered and the mill expanded greatly

Bald Eagle Spotted in Laurel
Paul Gilbertz - February 28, 2013

Pulling into my carport, on Wednesday February 27, it caught my eye immediately. I stared at it for a moment thinking how out of place it was. I remembered they were close to extinction in the 70’s due to the use of DDT. But there I was, in my West Laurel neighborhood, looking at a bald eagle. My wife’s Uncle had told me they’ve been seen around the Rocky Gorge reservoir. But here, in a tree above Kenny Road, sat our national bird. I ran inside and grabbed my camera. I was able to get a few pictures before it flew off.   A rabbit had been hit by a car. This appears to be what the bird was focused on.  Paul Gilbertz
